Kitty Hawk, North Carolina is a quiet town that offers plenty of things to do for visitors while still remaining a sleepy beach town. Commercialism has hit the surrounding areas, but Kitty Hawk stood true to its roots. While now more modern, it is still a quaint town with nothing but charm to offer.

Kitty Hawk Boasts Beautiful and Uncrowded Beaches

Kitty Hawk has an excellent beach area that is open to the public. There is full access with parking from eight different locations. During the summer season, there are full time life guards on duty who are stationed at certain points and also patrol on ATVs. Handicap accessibility is also available.

There are activities like swimming, surfing, sailing, fishing and shelling to keep tourists busy while visiting the beach. Kitty Hawk beach is an excellent surfing site and there is plenty of sand for the entire family to sprawl out and enjoy. Beach overcrowding is not a problem in Kitty Hawk, unlike some of the other public beaches in the Outer Banks areas of North Carolina.

Other Activities in Kitty Hawk

For those looking to learn a little more about nature, Kitty Hawk Woods is an excellent place to get up close and personal with the flora and fauna of North Carolina. Formed by storm swept seas that met with freshwater, the brackish wetland preserve is now home to a wide array of wildlife such as white tailed deer, red fox, alligators, and many bird species. Hiking trails are located throughout the reserve.

There are two great golf courses located in the Outer Banks region to provide visitors a top rate golfing experience on challenging greens. Visit the charming and majestic light houses in the area, or stop in one of the museums for a glimpse at Civil War history and much more.

Kitty Hawk’s Place in History

Kitty Hawk is also known for its contribution to the flight program. In 1900 Orville Wright came to Kitty Hawk and he and his brother spent three years there enjoying the privacy while they built their first flight machine. Despite their flight machine being launched four miles south of Kitty Hawk, it will always be known as the birth place of aviation.

There are great Kitty Hawk hotels for visitors to find comfortable accommodations. Staying in a Kitty Hawk inn is like having a home away from home. Cozy rooms and home cooked meals may be just what the travel weary visitor needs at the end of the day.

This article about Kitty Hawk hotels is written by the author who has great deal of knowledge about Kitty Hawk inn.

North Carolina’s Outer Banks is one of the most beautiful areas in America, and drays many thousands of tourists annually. For those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, there is simply no better place to travel to than Nag’s Head, which many people consider to be the center of the Outer Banks. Nag’s Head happens to have some of the best restaurants in North Carolina, and with the incredible bounty of seafood available, you can ensure that everything is fresh and of the utmost in quality. Nag’s Head romantic dining is easy to find.

Basnight’s Lone Ceder

Basnight’s is one of the most recognized culinary landmarks in the Outer Banks, as it has been in business for many, many years and is connected with North Carolina senator Marc Basnight. Located on a causeway near one of the largest bridges in the area, the scenery is certainly fitting. For the freshest and most beautifully prepared seafood (as well as one of the most romantic atmospheres in the area), it’s difficult to beat the location and ambiance of Basnight’s.

Front Porch Café

In terms of Nag’s Head restaurants, there may be no better romantic dining in the area than the Front Porch Cafe. The food at the Front Porch Cafe is a mixture between casual and fine dining, with a southern influence. Artfully prepared and utilizing only the best in ingredients, the Front Porch boasts some of the most innovative cuisine in North Carolina. In the summer, the Front Porch Cafe also has live music.

Blue Point

Just down the road from Nag’s Head is the tiny town of Duck, which houses what many people consider to be the best restaurant in the Outer Banks – Blue Point. Blue Point is simply stunning, with one of the best sound-side locations in the Outer Banks and some of the best fine-dining oriented food in the area as well. Blue Point sources many of their ingredients locally, including only the freshest of seafood. For Anyone who doesn’t mind spending a little extra money on an extremely good meal, there is no better food in the area than at Blue Point.

The Left Bank

The Left Bank is part of the Sanderling Resort and Spa, also located in Duck. The Left bank is a four diamond restaurant overlooking the tranquil waters of the Currituck Sound. They serve contemporary American cuisine using traditional French techniques. The restaurant supports local fishermen and farmers by using organic and local ingredients. The Left Bank is a lovely, romantic Nags Head restaurant.

The Nag’s Head romantic dining at the Nags Head restaurant is always so special as said in this interesting article.

Summer may have come to an end, but a beach vacation can still help you relax and rejuvenate your spirit! The “off-season” is a perfect time of year to plan a beach getaway with friends or family, especially in North Carolina. The weather has cooled off and the crowds have died down, leaving only the peace and tranquility that an oceanfront view evokes. It’s also a great time to find vacation packages and deals on rentals that won’t break the bank.

Top 5 North Carolina beach vacation destinations:

1) Bald Head Island - This distinctive North Carolina island is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Between the rich wildlife, quaint maritime shops, and fourteen miles of white sandy beaches, you’re sure to feel miles away from the ordinary. Rich in history, the island also boasts the state’s oldest lighthouse, Old Baldy, which provides an awe-inspiring view of the land to those who venture to the top. Cars are not permitted on this island, so the hustle and bustle of everyday life seems to disappear. Transportation by golf cart is both enjoyable and hassle-free. Bald Head is the perfect place to de-stress and reconnect with your roots.

2) The Outer Banks - This North Carolina beach vacation destination is both picturesque and affordable, especially at this time of year. Famous for its history and the East Coast’s tallest sand dunes, here you can tour the location where the Wright Brothers built and flew the world’s first airplane. Unique shops and restaurants provide an escape when you’re not lounging by the ocean.

3) Wrightsville Beach - Another great place to enjoy all the mighty Atlantic Ocean has to offer is Wrightsville Beach, NC. This vacation spot has a laid-back island charm and attitude that seems to be contagious. Countless attractions are just minutes away in downtown Wilmington. With Interstate 40 leading directly into town, Wrightsville Beach is also the most accessible beach in North Carolina.

4) Sunset Beach - This barrier island is located in the southernmost part of North Carolina. Though only 3 miles long, there is plenty to do in this quiet and serene beach town, including shopping, dining and golf. Sunset Beach is perfect for family beach vacations.

5) Carolina Beach - There is always plenty to do in this family-oriented beach town, including live music festivals, fireworks displays, and a seaside amusement park. Other entertainment options in Carolina Beach include a state aquarium, state park, and plenty of shops to explore!

Whether you’re looking for rest and relaxation or non-stop entertainment and activity, these beaches are for you. Plan your fall vacation to coastal North Carolina and let the fun begin!

More and more people are starting to call North Carolina the best place to retire, particularly New Bern. Florida has always been a mainstream retirement state, but with rising property taxes and many areas being over crowded, New Bern, North Carolina is beginning to take the lead. Many retirees who migrate South from the Northern part of the United States are looking to move away from the intense cold weather that they’ve known all their life. New Bern, North Carolina is the balance between the two. With a very short, mild winter (around 50F), you can still get a taste of home without all the hassle and inconvenience.

Besides the climate, New Bern offers retirees an array of activities. Because it is located on the Neuse River that connects to the Atlantic Ocean, boating opens up many activities that most towns can’t offer their residents. Atlantic Beach, known for it’s white, sandy beaches, is just a mere 35 miles from New Bern as well. This is the perfect location for the person who wants to live near the ocean, but doesn’t want the high cost or risk associated with it. Real estate in New Bern on either the Neuse or it’s connecting river, the Trent, is very affordable. Many moderate size homes can be bought with waterfront starting around $250,000. Being a buyer’s market, now is an excellent time to invest in waterfront property.

Golfing is another exceptional benefit that New Bern, NC has to offer. With over six golf courses and one currently in the works, this city is a golfer’s paradise. Take, for example, the community of Fairfield Harbour. It is known for its exceptional water views and its two, 18 hole golf courses. Just down the street you will find the neighborhood of Taberna, a tastefully designed retirement community with southern charm. Taberna boasts a stunning, 18 hole golf course built around wide man made lakes and was designed by Senior Jack Nicklaus Designer, Jim Lipe. These are just a few of the extraordinary golfing communities that New Bern has to offer.

New Bern, North Carolina is the dream destination for retirees. The ability to be closer to family up North, without the extreme weather and high property cost is a great incentive of its own. Add on the recreational activities that New Bern provides and that puts the decision over the top as one of the best places to retiree. Since you can get a great deal on real estate, this city is definitely one to be considered during your next move.

Recognized as the ‘Sailing Capital of North Carolina’, the serene, maritime village of Oriental offers several tournaments and regattas throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn months.

Regattas, Tournaments and So Much More in Oriental, North Carolina

Every year in late-April/early-May, The Oriental Dinghy Club of North Carolina holds their Annual Spring Regatta on the waters of the Neuse River. Large and small boat owners alike are invited to race and everyone can take part in the variety of social gathering events held throughout the weekend. The Oriental Dinghy Club also sponsors several more races throughout the seasons including the SOLO Race in October which welcomes boaters from near and far.

Early June is typically the time for the Oriental Cup Regatta, also referred to as the ‘Premier Sailing Event of the Year’. The weekend includes not only sailboat racing, but a full calendar of events that includes a Welcome Picnic, live music, fabulous food, dancing and more. The registration fee also provides you with one Regatta souvenir T-shirt and two ‘land passes’ allowing complimentary entry to all meals and events! All proceeds benefit the Bill Harris Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Taking place every year during the last weekend in July, The Rotary Club of Oriental sponsors their Annual Tarpon Tournament. It is the sport-fishing event of the year here, with cash and prizes totaling over $20,000! And the proceeds benefit a great cause – The Oriental Rotary Scholarship Fund.

Whether you enjoy entering in or just watching boat races and regattas, Oriental NC may be the place for you – visit it and see for yourself!

You may have heard of a little town on the North Carolina coast called Oriental. In fact, this little village calls themselves the sailing capital of North Carolina.

It would seem that that is not just idle talk either – Oriental boasts a boat to resident ratio of over 3 to 1. That’s 875 residents and over 2,700 boats.

But what draws people to Oriental? Here is an overview of why people, especially boaters and sailors, like Oriental so much.

1: Fine sailing. What may be rather obvious is that the number one attraction at Oriental is the fact that is offers such fine sailing. The Pamlico and Albemarle sounds and the Neuse river create a buffer that moderates the temperatures in Oriental – Winter is generally short and mild, and likewise summertime is not too harsh. Statistics in Sail Magazine indicate that Oriental has more sunny days, more water to sail in, and better winds than San Diego, California.

2: A Charming Town. Visitors to Oriental will find themselves in a cozy, friendly little seaside village. There are great places to walk, bike, or just sit and enjoy the scenery. In addition to all of the water surrounding this little town, you’ll find the scenery on land to be worthwhile, too. Many visitors especially enjoy the old homes on South Avenue.

3: Fishing. With a variety of salt, fresh and brackish water to try your luck in, Oriental is a great place to fish. You can fish from the bank, launch your boat, or hire a local guide to help you find the fish. No matter which way you choose to do it, there’s fishing enough for everyone in the little NC town!

As the Oriental NC website proudly advertises, you can visit their little town and sail, paddle, fish, eat…or just do nothin! It’s up to you!

- Waves

- Salvo

- Buxton

- Hatteras Village

- Frisco

- Ocracoke

You are never far away from any of these communities because the drive along the length of the area is only a little over 70 miles. It is easy to travel to this area from any direction and it is only a short distance from either the airport in Norfolk, Virginia or Raleigh, North Carolina.

This coastal region offers a myriad of sports and outdoor adventures for everyone. Enjoy scuba diving, windsurfing, kite surfing, swimming, walks along the sandy beaches, biking and some of the best fishing experiences in the world. If you are interested in visiting historical sites, you have many options to choose from. Visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills to learn all about the brothers?historic flight. Learn about the first Europeans to start a settlement in what is now the United States at the 25-acre park on Roanoke Island. Visit lighthouses or follow the Civil War Trail.

Explore the many museums that tell the story of the islands and the first peoples who lived there. Learn about the many shipwrecks that have occurred off the shores at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. Visit the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge where you will not only see alligators, but hundreds of different kinds of wildlife in their natural habitats. See the majestic trees and flowers of the Elizabethan Gardens and visit the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which stretched for 70 miles. You can learn about the many life-saving devices used in sea rescues and visit lighthouses and lifesaving stations. Some of the attractions on the Barrier Islands are free of charge, while others do have an admission cost.

Families with children can enjoy spending a day at one of many theme parks and raceways where the children can have a super time. Go-cart racing is very popular and miniature golf is an activity for the whole family. Take a wild horse safari to see the wild horses that still roam some of the islands or you might like to take a dolphin tour.

Accommodations abound in rental properties that are super luxurious. Some of these accommodations are homes that the owners rent and can accommodate large numbers of guests. You can swim in your own private pool and take a boardwalk to the beach. A short drive from where you are staying will take you to numerous attractions and stores where you can indulge in shopping. If camping is your preference, there are many campgrounds in the region and of course there are many hotels and motels where you will be quite comfortable.

Dine on a luxurious meal in one of the many restaurants or grab something to take with you to the beach. If you choose a rental property you can cook for yourself in the well-equipped kitchen or have a barbecue on the deck. You can also have a bonfire on the beach, but you do have to make sure that you obtain a permit to do so. There are so many things to do on vacation in this part of North Carolina that it will likely take you several visits to see and do them all.

Where else but the Outer Banks can provide kids of all ages the opportunity to learn and have fun at the same time? Each year, thousand of visitor descend upon this thin strip of shoreline bordering the north-easternmost end of North Carolina, mainly to enjoy the beach and other related activities. However, the Currituck Outer Banks offer more than miles of sand and sunny day, but the opportunity for all to meet the creatures who live there all year round. A great place to learn more about the wild side of the Outer Banks is at the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education.

The Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education is one-third of the state’s wildlife resources commission, located conveniently in Currituck County near two other popular attractions – The Whalehead Club and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. Open year round with varying hours in the off-season, the Center welcomes families, visitors, and school groups to learn more about the environment that sustains the array of marine life and other creatures who call the Currituck Sound home.

The wildlife center is quite large (over twenty-two thousand square feet) and houses a visitor’s center, exhibition hall, auditorium and an extensive gallery of waterfowl decoys. Visitors to the wildlife center may find exhibits that showcase wildlife of the barrier islands, from the many different species of fish to the ducks and geese that migrate south for the winter. Area histories of related industries like boating, fishing, and hunting are also featured from the early days to the present.

Depending on the time of year, the wildlife center may also host excursions and outreach programs designed to educate others about the importance of keeping the environment clean and healthy for Currituck’s special residents. No visit to the Outer Banks would be complete without a visit to this popular attraction in Corolla, North Carolina.
